International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Saturday 25th November 2023 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the start of sixteen days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.
This day is recognized globally to raise awareness about the prevalence and devastating effects of violence against women, as well as to promote efforts to prevent and eliminate it.The date was chosen to commemorate the Mirabal sisters—Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa—three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally assassinated on November 25, 1960, during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Their deaths became a symbol of the violence that women face in their fight against oppression.

The United Nations General Assembly officially designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1999. The day marks the beginning of the "16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence," which runs until December 10th, Human Rights Day.
The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women serves as a crucial platform for advocacy, education, and awareness-raising activities to address the various forms of violence that women experience, including domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and gender-based discrimination. It also provides an opportunity for governments, organizations, and individuals to come together to work towards creating a world free from violence and ensuring the protection of women's rights.
